Two Greenbrier High students were skipping school to break into affluent homes in Riverwood and Windmill plantations, stealing guns, jewelry and money, authorities said.
Lindon Oliver Leseburg, 17 (top left photo), and Benjamin Thomas Howard, 17, both of Evans, were charged Monday with five counts of burglary. Both are juniors in high school.
The teens would ring doorbells at their targeted homes and go inside if no one answered, sheriff’s Maj. Steve Morris said.
In one of their last break-ins on March 7, a woman inside a home on Darling Way heard the doorbell ring around 11:15 a.m. She didn’t answer, but she saw the two young men run around the back of her house and break her window. The 44-year-old woman yelled, and the suspects ran to their vehicle and left.
Maj. Morris said the description of the teens and their vehicle – along with video evidence of them in the vehicle – helped identify Leseburg and Howard as the serial burglars. Both confessed, and much of the jewelry and guns were recovered from a wooded area, where they had stashed them. The cash was not recovered.
In all, four homes in Riverwood were broken into and one in Windmill, Maj. Morris said. One was hit in January, two in February and the last two on March 7.
In some of the break-ins, the homes were unsecured. In the others, the homeowners had alarms, but they weren’t activated. There’s a lesson there, Maj. Morris said.
“If you have a system, activate it,” he said. “It’s useless turned off.”

An armed man broke into the home of a North Augusta woman and raped her Tuesday night after she returned home, authorities said.
Suspect David Henry Quiller Jr. also played a bizarre game of Russian Roulette and made the victim lay in the bed with him for hours, according to a sheriff’s report. The suspect finally left in the morning.
The 32-year-old victim called the sheriff’s office and identified Quiller by name, according to sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah.
Quiller, 45, was arrested Wednesday afternoon at his home on the 1200 block of Layback Way. The charges: Criminal sexual conduct in the first degree, burglary, kidnapping, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.
Authorities will not disclose where the rape occurred to protect the identity of the victim, and they will not disclose how the victim knew the suspect, possibly for similar reasons.
According to a sheriff’s report, the woman returned home at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, undressed and began taking a bath. Suddenly, at 11:45 p.m., Quiller entered her bathroom with a revolver pointed at her and ordered her out of the bathtub. He then raped her in a rear bedroom.
Quiller next removed all the bullets from his revolver and replaced one. “Quiller spun the chamber and pointed the revolver at the victim while pulling the trigger,” a sheriff’s report says. “Quiller also did this to himself.”
No one was hurt. Quiller made the victim lay with him in the bed until 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. The victim’s mother texted her to say she was picking her up for work, and the suspect left.
It is unclear how the suspect got inside the home, but the victim told investigators that he must have been in the house when she returned home since she used the deadbolt after returning. The deadbolt was not used while she was gone.
Quiller remains in the Aiken County Detention Center.
His record. Quiller was arrested for criminal sexual conduct in 2008, but Aiken County prosecutors suddenly dropped the charges within a few weeks, according to online records.
On a Facebook page for the suspect, he posted a photo of him from 2001 that was taken in a Georgia prison. (Click on photo to see message)
In Georgia, he was sentenced in 2001 to five years in prison for habitual impaired driving and more. In recent years, he has served small amounts of time in jail for obstruction of officers, fleeing police, reckless driving, criminal trespassing and more.

Aiken County authorities are struggling to find witnesses in Tuesday night’s shooting near New Ellenton that left one man dead and another man injured.
Devonte Green, 22 (pictured), was shot multiple times Tuesday night near a residence on Dry Branch Road, Coroner Tim Carlton said.
“He along with three other men were in a vehicle preparing to leave for work when the shooting occurred,” the coroner said. “He was pronounced dead at Augusta University Medical Center at 11:19 p.m.”
Authorities are not releasing the name of the injured person, who was listed in critical condition Tuesday night.
Witnesses told investigators that they had been sitting in a vehicle when they heard multiple shots fired by an unknown suspect. The sheriff’s office says the two victims were transported to a local hospital by Aiken County EMS, but Green was pronounced deceased by medical personal after arriving at the hospital.
No suspects have been located yet on this investigation, Capt. Nick Gallam said. The other two men in the car told investigators that they couldn’t identity the shooter.
Green is well known to law enforcement after his arrest in 2015 in connection with the murder of 35-year-old Dantroy Cuthbertson. At the time, Aiken County authorities said Green and a juvenile shot Cuthbertson to death in New Ellenton even as Green was being sought for a burglary. New Ellenton police said Green’s family was hiding him from police at the time of the killing.
In October, the Solicitor’s Office dropped the murder charge against Green for unknown reasons, but charges of burglary and other offenses are still pending, two years after his arrest.
Ironically, the brother of Dantroy Cuthbertson posted this message on Facebook on Wednesday morning: “I’m a firm believer of you reap what you sow and I don’t wish death on anybody but things happen for a reason.!! RIP TO MY BROTHER DANTROY CUTHBERTSON!!! PRAYING FOR THE FAMILY OF DEVONTAY GREEN.”
Anyone with information on the shootings is asked to contact the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office at 803-648-6811. Individuals may also call Crime stoppers of the Midlands: 888-CRIME-SC (888-274-6372). Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward up to $1,000.
Note: If you have a better photo of Devonte Green, please text it to The Jail Report at 803-487-3224.

Aiken investigators have arrested a career criminal in a series of fires that damaged four homes, including two that were total losses.
Jesse Andra Green, 35, of Aiken, was charged Tuesday with three counts of arson in the second degree and one count of arson in the third degree.
It wasn’t hard to pin the fires on Green. He was just released from prison after serving a few years for a 2013 arson and burglary in Aiken County. Green also had connections with several of the fire victims. And in one case, he was the first person to step forward as witness to the fire.
Aiken Public Safety officials say they confronted Green after realizing he was out of prison and frequented the Crosland Park neighborhood. The suspect confessed to starting the fires, police say.
Green has a list of arrests a mile long, mostly for disorderly conduct, trespassing, shoplifting and gross intoxication in Aiken County. He also has a two previous arson charges on his record from 2013. In those arson cases, he pled guilty and prosecutors dropped one arson count. A judge gave him a four-year prison sentence with five years of probation. He did not serve the whole four years.
In the Crosland Park neighborhood, Green’s accused of causing the following fires:
Aiken Public Safety investigators were assisted in the investigation and subsequent arrest by the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office Forensics Unit. Green will have additional charges by Aiken County Sheriff’s Office for incidents which occurred within their jurisdiction.
