Aiken Driver Killed in Police Chase; 2 Passengers Injured

An Aiken man is dead and two passengers in critical condition after a high-speed chase with police at 4 in the morning Sunday, authorities said.

The driver, 27-year-old Andre Jackson Jr. (pictured), was not wearing a seat belt during the chase and struck a tree, killing him, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Darryl M. Ables. The collision occurred at 4:50 a.m. at the intersection of Chesterfield Street and Columbia Avenue.

“Jackson was the unrestrained driver of a 2005 Mitsubishi 4-door that was traveling at a high rate of speed and being pursued by Aiken Department of Public Safety officer’s when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree,” Ables said in a press release. “Two passengers in the vehicle were taken to Augusta University Medical Center in critical condition.”

The chase started in response to a residential burglary in which the homeowner gave a description of the vehicle, officers spotted this vehicle and attempted to make a traffic stop, police said. The pursuit lasted less than a half-mile before the accident occurred.

His Sister Speaks. Jackson’s younger sister, Zaria Dixon, told The Jail Report that she is not sure why her brother didn’t stop for police, but she knows he wouldn’t have committed the burglary.

“He didn’t do that,” she said. “Anybody can describe a car.”

As for why he was up so early in the morning, Dixon said, “That is him. He always do that.”

Dixon said she learned of the terrible news on Facebook at 9 a.m. Sunday. She wanted the community to know that her brother was a great guy.

“He was helpful. He was charming. He wasn’t a troublemaker at all,” she said. “He loved everyone. He was loved by everyone. He loved his kids and would do anything for them. It’s just sad that he is gone.”

Zaria is pictured here (in hat) with Andre Jackson and two of their cousins several years ago.

Jackson reportedly has three children born to two different women, including a son who was born four months ago to his fiancé. He is a high school graduate and previously worked at a local grocery store as a bagger and stocker. He has five siblings, including Zaria Dixon.

“We so close and nobody could tear us apart,” Zaria said. “We have so many memories. … He always kept me laughing and taught me right from wrong. I always looked up to him. Now he’s looking down on me. I always told him everything and he told me everything, it’s hurting me so bad knowing that he’s not here and I don’t have nobody to turn to when I’m having problems. I love him so much and wish he was still here to guide me in the path that he started for me. He will always remain in my heart. There’s always a part of him that’s in me.”

Jackson was also remembered by friends and family on Facebook:

Marie Powell said: “Rip Andre Jackson. You were truly a genuine person. Prayers to other friends and especially his family. May God give you the peace and strength that you need.”

“(He) always had a smile an a hug to greet you with an would keep u laughing.. He will truly be missed,” wrote Chantavia Fuller.

From Imani Wedderburn: “I know I’ve only known you for almost 2 years but you were the most kind hearted person ever and sooo funny you kept me laughing when we used to work together I will never forget you and ill keep your kids and family in my prayers.”

The Jail Report has requested more information from the Aiken Department of public Safety on the purpose of the chase and an incident report. We are waiting to hear from them.

The accident is being investigated by the Aiken County Coroner’s Office along with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, MAIT, and the Aiken Department of Public Safety.

Jail Report Note: If you have a better photo of Andre Jackson or photos or memories of the two passengers he was with, please text it to 803-487-3224.

Aiken Robber is Killed by Victim in Circle K Parking Lot

An Aiken robber who pulled a gun on a Circle K customer Thursday morning was fatally shot by the victim after a physical altercation, authorities said.

Steven B. Klimek, 39, of Batesburg (pictured), was pronounced dead at the Circle K on Highway 19  North in Aiken County, according to Coroner Tim Carlton.

“Mr. Klimek attempted to rob a customer at the store by using a handgun. The customer initially complied with Mr. Klimek and gave him $15.00,  however the customer was able to retrieve his own gun from his vehicle and shot Mr. Klimek several times,” the coroner said in a press release.

The victim told sheriff’s investigators that he was pumping gas into his truck about 6 a.m. Thursday when the suspect approached him, brandishing a handgun and demanded money. The caller also told deputies that the suspect demanded him to get in his vehicle while being held at gunpoint that resulted in a physical altercation.

“During the altercation, the suspect’s weapon discharged and the victim grabbed his own weapon and shot at the suspect,” a sheriff’s press release says. “Aiken County EMS responded to the scene where the suspect was pronounced deceased.”

Investigators, Aiken County Coroner’s Office and the 2nd Circuit Solicitor’s Office responded to assist with the investigation. This investigation is on-going, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

Klimek was featured in The Jail Report in September 2015 after his arrest for possession of a stolen vehicle. Not surprisingly, the charge is pending in the court system and had not been resolved after over a year.

In Lexington County, he was arrested in November 2015 for burglary, another charge that remained pending at the time of this morning’s shooting.

Note: If you have a better photo or information on Klimek, please text it to The Jail Report at 803-487-3224.

Teen, 15, Shot During Home Invasion in Beech Island… Robbers Stole a PlayStation 4

A 15-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being shot during a home invasion early Friday at an apartment in Beech Island, authorities said.

Two of the three suspects were captured, but a third suspect is on the loose. And authorities say the robbers only got away with a Playstation 4 system!

The victim – identified only as a North Augusta teen with the last name Shores – was being treated at an Augusta hospital and was said to be undergoing surgery at 10:40 a.m. Friday, authorities said.

Two suspects were captured after a police chase, including 17-year-old Undraize Antonio Dixon (bottom photo) of Beech Island and 17-year-old Deonte Raequan Schultz (top) of Beech Island. Investigators are obtaining warrants for three counts Attempted Murder, one count Armed Robbery and one count Burglary 1st Degree for each subject.

The home invasion at 1034 Fairview Road happen at 1 in the morning as the 15-year-old victim was playing video games with a 16-year-old boy from Warrenville with the last name Jones.

According to a sheriff’s report, three masked men came into the apartment through an unlocked door. One of the suspect began shooting in the victims’ direction while another went up to the older teen and struck him several times in the face with a gun.

“The subjects then quickly searched the bottom floor of the residence, took the listed Playstation 4 system and proceeded to flee the scene while firing additional rounds into the interior of the residence,” a report says.

Luckily, a sheriff’s deputy was in the shopping center at 4435 Jefferson Davis Highway, heard gunshot coming from the area of Fairview Road and responded to investigate.  A high-speed chase led to the capture of the two suspects around Blackstone Camp Road near Storm Branch Road.

Authorities say the two victims did not live in the apartment and were only visiting. A woman who lives in the home, 35-year-old Wendi McClure, was not injured in the incident. She told deputies she was sleeping when the home invasion occurred and awoke to investigate when one of the fleeing suspects fired in her direction.

The suspects who got away is described as a black male, 5’8″ tall, 120 pounds with black hair wearing a black hoodie black pants and dark shoes. If anyone has any information we encourage them to call the Aiken County Sheriffs at 803-648-6811. Individuals may also call Crimestoppers of the Midlands: 888-CRIME-SC (888-274-6372).

Cigarette Lover Tied to 4 Smash & Grab Burglaries

This man likes to smoke. But he doesn’t like to pay for his bad habit.

Columbia County authorities say he is tied to four smash & grab burglaries in Columbia and Richmond counties. In each case, he brings his own bag and steals Newport cigarettes.

He is tied to the Dec. 2 burglary at the Sprint on Washington Road in Martinez and the two that occurred this week at CVS and Fuel Express.  He is also on video burglarizing the BP on Wheeler Rd in Richmond County.

At the Dec. 2 incident at Sprint gas station, a woman arrived to deliver newspapers and observed the front door broken. Deputies came and saw a large rock on the floor inside the store across from the door. There were several packs of Newport cigarettes scattered on the floor.

If you recognize the man or have any information, please call the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office at 706-541-2800.
